How to cleanse your crystals

Cleansing your stones and crystals is an essential part of your meditation and self-healing routine. Think of all the things you touch on a daily basis. Now imagine all of the germs that find their way onto your hands. Then imagine those germs as “energy”. When you pick up your crystals you transfer that “energy” whether positive or negative onto your stone or crystal. Just as it’s very important to your health to keep your body and hands clean it’s also vital that you cleanse your crystals regularly. If you're meditating daily – I’d say give them a cleanse at the minimum once a week. And before handling your crystals, especially the one crystal that’s attuned specifically to you – you’ll want to make sure your hands are clean.

There are various ways in which you can cleanse your crystals. You can smudge them with sage (my preferred method), rinse them in purified or salt water, leave them in a bowl of brown rice or salt overnight, or use your mind to envision a white light cleansing your stone.

Cleansing your crystals with Sage

This is my preferred method because I feel like the smoke of the sage is truly clearing away the negativity and electrical smog that can build up. I also just love the smell of Sage and while I’m cleansing my crystal through the smoke of the burning Sage I also give it a whirl around myself and the room I’m in to spread the good blessings all around me. Cleansing your crystals with sage is easy. Grab a piece of sage, holding it at the handle with the tip facing away from you, you’ll light the tip. As the tip lights up, blow on it until the fire goes out and your sage stick is exhausting the smoke. Take your crystal and pass it through the smoke. As you do this you can set your intentions of cleansing the crystal with an affirmation. For example: I cleanse this crystal of all negativity.

Cleansing your crystals with purified or salt water

My second preferred method of crystal cleansing in dipping my crystals in salt water. I live right by the Ocean, so I’m lucky enough to take my personal crystals to the beach every now and then to rinse off anything that I feel is not going away with the sage routine. Cleansing your crystals with salt water or purified water is easy. Grab your crystal and run the purified or salt water over it for a few seconds. Go ahead and rub the crystal to really get that negative energy off of it. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD for soft (MOH scale of 5 or less) or porous crystals/stones like calcite, talc, fluorite, selenite, satin spar, halite, malachite, lapis lazuli, ivory, pyrite as then will dissolve overtime – some immediately. To be on the safe side, if your crystal chips easily it’s probably not a good idea to pour or dip in water. This is another reason why I prefer to use Sage to cleanse my crystals.

Cleansing your crystals with salt or brown rice

You can also cleanse your crystals by placing them in a bowl of salt or brown rice overnight. Make sure the crystal is submerged in the salt or rice. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD for crystals that chip easily or have many ridges in which the salt can get stuck. For example using the salt method might not be a good idea for Black Tourmaline or Kyanite.

Cleansing your crystals with intention

It is said that you can also cleanse your crystals with intention, by imagining a white light engulfing the crystal and such cleansing it. I personally have not tried this method and would prefer to physically interact with the crystal in the process of remove any excess.
