DIOSA 001: Francine Thirteen

DIOSA 001: Francine Thirteen

This is the first in a series called “DIOSA” where we feature women who are embracing their inherent magick and walking in a spiritual path all their own.

By happen chance...

I stumbled across Francine Thirteen while searching for some new tunes on NPR. After listening to Shifter, I thought, "Okay okay... I'm feeling this", then made my way over to Dear Adam, then 13 statements and was sold. Her symbolic visuals and performance ritual are a refreshing break from the constant recycled pop that clogs the music industry.

I'm thankful for the relevancy of her lyrics to the times we are in and the state of feminism. Francine Thirteen is bringing magick and the art of the ritual to the people, whether they're ready for it or not. She is calling Adam out by his name, and shining a new light on Lilith - which I am all here for!

Get comfy, grab a cup of tea and join us in our first DIOSA Q&A with Francine Thirteen; where were discuss her music, favorite crystals and more!
Enjoy witchy babes!

BM: BESIDES YOUR SELF-COINED RITUAL POP GENRE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO SOMEONE WHO'S NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE?

FT: I would describe it as wild restoration & beats that growl. It sounds like the magic of sacred virgins & holy whores. It is the sound of a Rose when she grows. It is the rhythm of heroes being born.

BM: WHEN DID YOU FULLY EMBRACE YOUR INNER GODDESS, AND BECOME SO UNAPOLOGETIC IN THE WAY YOU LIVE AND CREATE ART?

FT: I’m still blooming, but I had a major breakthrough in 2014 just after my maternal Grandmother passed. I feel her energy often pushing me to live out loud.

BM: DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A WITCH? WHAT DOES THAT WORD MEAN TO YOU?

FT: A Witch to me is a Wise Woman, A Healer, and a Mistress of Energy. Yes I do consider myself one and it is a path I revere and take very seriously. I am still learning and always will be.

BM: DO YOU FIND IT HARD TO WALK IN YOUR OWN SPIRITUAL PATH WHEN YOU COME FROM A SOUTHERN BAPTIST UPBRINGING? IS YOUR FAMILY RECEPTIVE TO YOUR BELIEFS? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO YOU THAT THEY UNDERSTAND YOU?

FT: Whew! These are great questions and some that many of my cohort grapple with. Mine is a triumphant path, regardless of its challenges. My ForeMothers were midwives. The gifts of healing and intuition are quite strong in my family, but we are a complicated bunch. I don’t care whether they understand me or not, because they know me on a cellular level. It’s a bond that can’t be broken.

BM: DO YOU USE CRYSTALS IN YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE? IF YOU DO, HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THEM? WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE?

FT: I do. I use selenite and quartz often, but obsidian is one of my BEST friends. I keep one in my purse most of the time and I sleep with one under my pillow when anxious. It helps me to remove fear, anxiety, tension, etc.

BM: IN YOUR NEW RECORD 'LUST HEALS, GIVE ME MY SIN AGAIN', YOU SING ABOUT LILITH AND THE NECESSARY BALANCE SHE BRINGS TO THE DIVINE FEMININE. WHAT OTHER FEMALE ARCHETYPES AND GODDESSES DO YOU FEEL MOST CONNECTED TO?

FT: I love Asherah, Mother of The Tree of Life and Mother of The Sacred Pole.

BM:YOUR RECORD, STATEMENTS IS SERENE, PACKED WITH TRUTHS AND UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE. TWO THINGS THAT STUCK OUT TO ME WHERE #7 “I FEEL MEMORIES ARE STORED MORE IN THE BODY, LESS IN THE MIND" AND #11 – “I FEEL THAT SEX AND CONJURING ARE THE SAME. CAN YOU ELABORATE SOME MORE ON THESE?

FT: Sexual energy. Number 7 is really a nod to cellular memory. We express culture in so many ways without even thinking about it. Its in the foods we cook, the dances we dance, the old hairstyles that always seem to come back into fashion. My favorite quote is, “You can’t escape history or the spirits singing in your blood; when the mind refuses, the body knows.” Number 11 is a nod to the creative capacity of sex.

BM: WHAT'S THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SHRINE THAT YOU CREATE ON STAGE WHEN PERFORMING? WHAT RITUAL TOOLS AND TOTEMS DO YOU USE?

FT: The shrine is a focal point for me to conduct ceremony and tell a story. I use certain objects (crystal eggs, wands, statues, feathers) to represent the essence of fertility, birth, sex, healing, or whatever I’m attempting to communicate.

BM: WALK US THROUGH YOUR WRITING PROCESS?

FT: Although beautiful to me and deeply satisfying, my full writing process is too chaotic to describe. What I can say is that nature is a key ingredient. The oak tree in my backyard has been the first to hear all of my tunes, lol.

BM: HOW ARE YOU COPING IN TODAY'S AMERICA WHERE THE SYSTEM IS CONSISTENTLY FAILING WOMEN, MINORITY COMMUNITIES AND DEMONIZING RELIGIOUS PRACTICES THAT DON'T FIT WITHIN THE MAINSTREAM MOLD? ANY SELF-CARE TIPS YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE FOR OTHERS GOING THROUGH THE SAME?

FT: I am creating my own personal universe. That involves acknowledging that regardless of whatever the program is, we are the beauty that the world craves. Herbal infusions (nettles, oatstraw, red raspberry are among my favorite herbs) are a huge part of my self-care and a way that I take ownership over my own health.

BM: TELL US WHERE WE CAN KEEP UP WITH YOU ONLINE. DO YOU PLAN TO GO ON TOUR? ANY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES?

FT: I’m Francine Thirteen on Facebook. I’m 13thevenusian on Instagram. I will be dropping an EP very soon and will be announcing performance dates soon!
